Become an exchange student

One of our goals is to ensure that as many students as possible get to spend a semester of their education abroad at a prominent partner university. Our partner universities often have several international accreditations and are highly ranked in international contexts – a strong guarantee that you will continue to receive high-quality education during your semester abroad.

Information about exchange studies related to  Covid-19

Navigating in the ever-changing circumstances caused by the pandemic situation has been challenging for universities and students alike, but especially for you who have been planning and organizing your upcoming exchange studies. Please see the information below for students nominated for an exchange, and students currently participating in an exchange semester.

Many uncertainties concerning exchange studies
There are a few reasons to why your exchange studies might not be able to 
be carried out as planned, for example closed country borders, quarantine regulations in the host country, visa restrictions, travel restrictions/recommendations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or changed terms and conditions for insurance (Student UT).

Conditions may change on a short notice, before and during your exchange. Due to the uncertainty of the situation, LUSEM strongly recommends that your decisions are considered carefully. Our general advice is if you feel worried, then perhaps staying in Lund might be the better option.

Arrange for a back-up plan.  
In order to be ready for studies at LU if your exchange is not possible, you should apply for courses as a back-up plan. Do this before 15 October/15 April by applying at www.antagning.se. If you are studying a programme with semester registration, you should instead contact an administrator at your programme. If you are going on exchange, you should decline your offer so that another student can take your place in the course.

Please consider the following as part of your preparations and during your exchange:

Online courses from the host university
In the case that you are not able to carry out your exchange semester, you may still be able to participate in online courses from your host university instead.

Please note that Student UT only covers you in your host country. If you choose to study online courses from your home, you therefore need to make sure to have home insurance to cover any unforeseen incidents.

If you want to withdraw from the exchange
If you determine you cannot (or don’t want to) undertake your exchange studies, it is important to inform the International Office at LUSEM.

Your host university has information for you on what is important to consider when being a student there. Don't hesitate to contact them and ask for advice.

During your exchange 

It’s important that you continue to stay up-to-date with the information from your local embassy and from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.  

Your host university can provide you with on-site support and assistance. 

Always keep the International office at LUSEM informed should you decide to cancel your exchange and leave your host country. If you decide to continue your studies online, please see the information above.

It is also recommended to stay in touch with the insurance administrators at Kammarkollegiet: forsakring@kammarkollegiet.se   

If you need to use the insurance Student UT, you must make a claim. The claim form must be signed by you and sent with any reports and/or receipts to the International Office at LUSEM. Thereafter it will be sent to Kammarkollegiet. If you are in Europe, you should use the European Health Insurance Card for any health-related matters. 

What is an exchange?

Being an exchange student means spending a semester abroad at one of LUSEM’s many partner universities, allowing you to take advantages of excellent academic programmes around the globe. There are many benefits of studying abroad:

  • Boost your CV with international experience.
  • Experience a different style of education and take courses of interest that you may not have otherwise been able to take.  
  • Improve your language skills.
  • Take part of well-organised introduction weeks with cultural and social activities.
  • Become part of a growing global community of exchange students, including those who come to study at LUSEM.

Students who are not required to pay tuition fees in Sweden are also not required to pay tuition fees to the host university. Tuition-fee-paying students who are non-EU/EEA citizens will be required to pay a tuition fee to Lund University during their exchange semester, but not to the host university.

The academic credits you have earned may be transferred based on programme-specific requirements, and may be included in your degree.

All exchange places are applied for through the International Office at the School of Economics and Management, except for the one-year exchange places at the University of California, which are to be applied for separately through the UC Study Center.
