Apply for the PhD programme

As a PhD student you can acquire high-level expertise in a specific area. A doctor’s degree is the most advanced academic studies qualification in Sweden.

The doctoral programme normally entails four years of full time studies and is concluded with a doctoral degree. It is also possible to enroll for a licentiate degree – which normally corresponds to two years of full-time studies.

There are two possible forms of study finance: employment under a doctoral studentship, or external funding. External funding can consist of employment outside the university or a stipend from an external source. In Sweden, all recruitment has to take place in open competition. Hence, all PhD positions need to be publicly advertised. Neither self-financed PhD studies nor personal sponsors are allowed.

Application procedure

  1. Find a vacant PhD position, announced on the Lund University website, or a PhD stipend, announced here.
  2. Follow the application instructions in the announcement.

We do not accept applications that are not linked to PhD positions or PhD stipends announced by us.

There is no set application period for PhD positions at our department, vacancies (and stipends) are advertised as and when a position arises. Check our website on a regular basis to be sure not to miss any announcements.

Admission

After an application deadline, the applicants are reviewed and ranked by qualified reviewers. On the basis of this evaluation, a candidate is suggested to the Director of Research and PhD programme, who then presents the suggestion to the Research and PhD Education Committee (FFUN). If FFUN accepts the suggested candidate, the Head of Department makes the formal decision to accept the applicant to the PhD programme.
